I wrote for newspapers for decades. I’ve written books. And I did a fair bit of specialty work for magazines.
One of my favorite assignments ever came from Kiplinger’s, the glossy monthly known for being America’s first personal finance magazine and its tight writing. The editors asked me to write a story called “Desert Island Keepers,” where I got to interview top U.S. fund managers about the one stock they’d buy if they were marooned on a desert island.
The story was fun to report and write. And it introduced me to some new perspectives. But most important of all was the way it reinforced (for me) the Wealth Builder mindset that’s the core of our beliefs here at Stock Picker’s Corner (SPC).
I mean … just think about it: Being “marooned” means you’ve got no contact with the outside world. No iPhone. (Sat-phones are verboten, too.) No Internet. No WiFi. No pipeline to your broker. No access to your brokerage account.
No way to buy. To sell. To trade. Or to hedge.
In short: You buy a stock, ETF, fund, precious metal or cryptocurrency before you fail to return from that “three-hour tour” … and you own it until you get rescued three, five or seven years later.
That kind of buying to hold for years is pretty much what a Wealth Builder does … (sans the palm trees, sunburn, lack of bottled water and Gilligan’s Island trivia references.)
So I dipped into my memory bank … pulled up this fun assignment … and issued the challenge to some of the experts in the SPC network.
We’re leading off with Danny Brody, a VC and longtime friend who just launched The Net Worth Club here on Substack. He’s always a fun interview … and this one was a total blast.
Danny spotlights the key element of the 2024 first half … tells us what to watch for “next.”
And once he put on his contestant’s hat and channeled his “Desert Island Danny” alter ego, we both “leveled up.” And for his “Desert Island” pick, Danny nominated a stock that was an “old friend.”
In short, I essentially interviewed an old friend … about an old friend.
We had fun. Danny detailed some great stuff. And I want to hear what you think of his “Desert Island” pick at the 15:03 mark.
