Here at Stock Picker’s Corner (SPC), we’re Wealth Builders — which means we play the long game.
Three years, five years, seven years, and even 10 years … or longer.
But we also like Special-Situation Investing. We’re not “trading,” per se. We refuse to use options. But we do like to find unique opportunities that are a bit shorter term than our traditional Wealth Builders, but that offer much higher probabilities of success than “trades,” or super-low-probability options speculations.
One of the differences between “trades” and “special situations” is that the latter are more recognizable and can be more easily categorized or grouped.
Here are some examples …
Corporate breakups (spinoffs), mergers and acquisitions (M&A), so-called “financial engineering” (buybacks and consistent dividend increases), insider buying, follow-the-billionaires (like Warren Buffett) and even following activist investors.
I’ve had success with many of these personally and professionally.
And along with the true Wealth Builder plays in our paid-service SPC Premium, we’ve included some best-of-the-best “special situation” picks of our own.
Some — like silver, and silver stocks — achieved that “special” status because of general future financial murkiness … AND seismic supply/demand changes ignited by the AI Era.
Others are even more intriguing … for instance, one innately great “Micro Sector” company that boasts that “follow-the-billionaires” kicker — and that also dangles buyout potential.
But with Special Situations, like standard Wealth Builders, we’re always hunting for others to consider. And we’re “lifetime learners,” too.
So when our good friend Danny Brody, a successful VC who’s CEO of ORO Capital and publisher of The Net Worth Club here on Substack told us about a special-situation investment involving activists, I’ve invited him back here to SPC to give us his special “take.”
Danny’s a fun interview — and I say that as a guy who, during my 22-year-reporting career, interviewed hundreds of executives as part of my job. With a track record for finding the best opportunities (Danny and his team have successfully raised over $750 million for numerous early-stage ventures), he speaks with the perspective of a “player” and not an observer.
This particular story involves Elliott Investment Management and embattled Southwest Airlines Co. LUV 0.00%↑. It’s a great case study for this type of special situation. And it could serve as a starting point for additional research for you.
After watching the interview, you can also check out Danny’s free report on Elliott Management and Southwest here.
