Back when I was covering Eastman Kodak Co. KODK 0.00%↑ — and back when the “Big Yellow Box” photo giant was still supplying film to the movie biz – I got to spend a long week out in Hollywood for a series of stories I was doing.
I got to visit a special-effects studio, the shooting set for a TV pilot, the theater where the Academy Awards were held and even a dinner honoring Oscar-nominated cinematographers (the year, I believe, of Shawshank Redemption and Forrest Gump).
As part of that project, I spent a lot of time reading movie magazines, trade journals, newspapers and even “scandal sheets.”
In short … I had a blast. And, as a lifelong movie-lover, I’ve continued to peruse movie media. But I’ve watched the continued erosion of “Old Hollywood,” while at the same time witnessing the emergence of influencers, reality shows and folks who are famous for being … famous.
Hey, call me Old School.
Which I am.
Still, some of the “creations” that have rolled out of this era are entertaining … like the weekly talk shows that analyze reality shows … or the splashy features like “Who Wore it Better?”
Us Weekly does it … Cosmopolitan does it … E! ran it as a TV series (see the image above). And now you’ll see it on Pinterest … Ranker … even Reddit.
You know what I’m talking about. Someone finds two actors, actresses, politicos or other celebs who wore the same outfit to different events … and then ranks “Who Wore It Better?”
The more-creative folks even compare a real celeb wearing a “unique” outfit with a lookalike cartoon character, a comic-book superhero or villain, a vegetable like an ear of corn, a flower pot, a farm animal, a grilled-cheese sandwich, a ham … or a Muppet.
Well, following up after the First Annual “Desert Island Stocks Challenge” here at Stock Picker’s Corner (SPC), we’re creating our own version of “Who Wore It Better?”
I’m calling it: “Who Recommended It Best?”
And I want YOU to be the judges.
“AND THE NOMINEES ARE”
Before we do a “reminder rundown” on our contestants and their stock picks, let’s review the “rules” of the challenge.
As part of our Mid-Year Review, we posed this question to a half dozen experts in the SPC Network:
You knew you were about to be marooned on a desert island, meaning you’d be there for two, three, five, seven years – or more.
You had to pick one stock or investment to park some (but not all) of your money in.
And you wouldn’t be able to check on it, hedge against it, trade it, or sell it during that stretch — making it a long-term investment.
Given all those parameters, I then asked: What would that investment be?
Our experts were enthusiastic contestants …
Here’s who they are … and here’s what they recommended. We want YOU to tell US … Who Recommended It Best?
Day One: Danny Brody – Alibaba Group Holding Ltd. BABA 0.00%↑.
Day Two: Peter Krauth – Wheaton Precious Metals Corp. WPM 0.00%↑.
Day Three: David Zeiler – Bitcoin (BTC).
Day Four: Keith Fitz-Gerald – Apple Inc. AAPL 0.00%↑.
Day Five: Matt Warder – Natural Resource Partners LP NRP 0.00%↑.
Day Six: Six Bravo/Special Situation Inv. (Stock I) – They also liked Natural Resource Partners and Bitcoin but shared Texas Pacific Land Corp. TPL 0.00%↑.
There you have it, folks.
Cast your vote in our poll (the poll only allowed up to five options, so if you like Texas Pacific Land Corp., let us know in the comments).
That’s it for today.
I’ll be back tomorrow with some updated (bullish) price targets for a recent recommendation in the Model Portfolio for SPC Premium members, and I’ll see everyone else back here next week.
