I like the Desert Island Stock game. I fear I'd be boring and go for Apple. Over any given five years, I guess Apple has given solid returns so I'd be reasonably confident of going back home to a decent nest egg. But if I were in a gambling mood....Sweetgreen.

Jason: Thanks for the note ... glad you like the game. We thought it would be fun. As for boring ... seems to me that you give yourself FAR too little credit. First rule of investing: "Know Thyself." Know your risk tolerance, know your goals, do the work. Your comment about Apple, and why you'd choose it, show a sense of self-understanding, analysis and personal objectives. So I'd still use a "B" word to describe you ... but instead of "boring," maybe "brilliant?" If more investors were self aware like this, more would be successful. Well done. Nice to hear from you again. Have a terrific Fourth holiday. Write again. Bill Patalon

Ah, you are definitely too kind, Bill, but I'll take 'brilliant' over 'boring' any day. Sadly, being British, I can't in good conscience celebrate today: it was a bit of a disaster for us. I was in the US for July 4th last year and was quite amazed at the pageantry. I hope you have a good one!

My Dear Frowley: (as in ... My Dear Holmes ... you being British ... and my Dad having turned me onto Conan Doyle at a young age, I'll "observe" the Fourth by being formal just this once): I had a newsletter before this one ... called Private Briefing .. at another publisher ... and had a big subscriber list ... probably in the 50K range ... but I developed a smallish group of "insiders" of sort who wrote often and fostered exchanges like the one we're enjoying.

Note sure what part of Britain you call home ... When I was a senior in the journalism program at Penn State, I won inclusion in that program's annual exchange program with the University of Manchester ... STILL one of the great experiences of my life. I spent some time in London with a short "attachment/internship" and got to tour Scotland (including the famed Loch Ness, which I'd always wanted to see).

The Fourth is one of my favorite holidays ... I live about 40 minutes from Fort McHenry ... which I visit a number of times a year.

We can both be glad that, after our two little adversarial adventures in the 1770s and 1810s, our countries learned to work together ... lol ... although let's hope that "type" of collaboration isn't needed again.

All kidding aside, I enjoy your comments ... our whole tiny team does. Drop us a note anytime.

When you are next here in the states, you'll have to LMK.

Thank you for your kind words, Bill. I have seen very little if the great state of Maryland, which is where I presume you are based. Doubtless that is something I ought to rectify! I’m really glad you enjoyed your time in my own country. Although I’m English I actually live in Scotland so I’m particularly gratified to see that you are familiar with the place.

The Fourth was a strange experience for me. Naively I’d assumed it would be a more or less restrained affair much like our own November 5th. Boy, was I wrong. South Dakota was wild. They kept waking me up with pistol-fire.

I’m enjoying your Substack & hope you soon get back to that 50K mark. Even a medium-sized readership seems a long way off to me but I plan to keep at it. Looking forward to seeing how my Apple shares are doing in five years, too.

All the best, & enjoy your holiday!

Jason
